Growth Mindset? Fixed Mindset? What exactly is it and why is a growth mindset important for your own development? Learn more about the idea of a growth mindset so that you can develop yourself successfully.
What exactly does “Growth Mindset” mean?
Do you believe that your skills and talents can be developed? Do you believe that your intelligence can develop?
If your answers to these questions are “yes,” then you probably have more of a “growth mindset” – namely, this describes our belief in the possibility of developing our skills, competencies, talents – and even our intelligence. This can happen, for example, through hard work, a good strategy, talking to others, or even continuing our own education. People who do not believe in the possibility of further developing these aspects, but rather in innate talents, skills and intelligence, have a “Fixed Mindset” . Mindset describes your ways of thinking, beliefs and your own attitude. Your Mindset determines your actions, your decisions and your behavior.
Whether we have a “Growth Mindset” or a “Fixed Mindset” is not consistent across all situations. In one situation we may show more of a Growth Mindset and in another area of life more of a Fixed Mindset. What is more important here is that we are aware of this and learn for ourselves which moments and circumstances have an influence on our thinking and belief in the possibility of further development.
What does this mean for you and your personal success?
A growth mindset makes us more successful! “Why?” you may be asking yourself now. This can be vividly explained: When we believe that we (can) continuously evolve, we are more likely to take advantage of those opportunities – and not rest on the belief that, yes, our skills are already set and therefore we can’t evolve anyway. A growth mindset also allows us to learn from our mistakes and see challenges as opportunities.
Your belief in your ability to grow makes you successful – and you can literally “outgrow” yourself.
And this is how you can foster your Growth Mindset for your own advancement:
We now know that a growth mindset is enormously important for your own further development. Therefore, I would like to give you some tips for your own Growth Mindset:
First Tip:
See change as an opportunity
Try to see any change as an opportunity for your own development and growth. Often changes seem unpleasant and cause stress for us. However, if you define these situations as an opportunity for you, then you will go into them with a more positive attitude.
The following questions can help you:
What could be the positive outcome of this change?
What opportunity might it create for you?
Which change did you find unpleasant at first in the past and then received a wonderful opportunity through it?
Second Tip:
Believe in yourself
Believe in yourself! You have many skills and abilities. Every day you gain new experiences and thus develop yourself directly or indirectly. By believing in yourself, you give yourself the opportunity to develop and gain experience.
Third Tip:
Do not be afraid of mistakes
Don’t be afraid of mistakes – but see them as an opportunity to learn from them and develop yourself. Everyone makes mistakes and that is perfectly normal.
Often, we realize that even the worst mistake is not that serious by asking: What is the worst that could happen?
Fourth Tip:
Set goals
Goals help you to continuously develop yourself and your own skills. Personally, I can recommend the “SMART formula” for defining your goals, because then you know exactly what you want to have achieved by when.
Which goals are you currently pursuing?
My conclusion for you:
The concept of the “Growth Mindset” and “Fixed Mindset” was developed by Carol Dweck, Scientist at the Stanford University, developed and describes our human belief in our own advancement and personal growth.
Your personal Growth Mindset allows you to gather experiences, learn from them and develop yourself further.
